CUNNING FRAUD BY COLLIERY WORKER.

At Poutefract, on Saturday, Walter TAYLOR, late a clerk in the employ of Hemsworth Colliery Company was charged with obtaining money by false prettenses on the 11th inst.

The prisoner sent false telegrams, purporting to come from the Company's agent in London to the cashier, ordering him to sent by TAYLOR £20. Prisoner was sent to catch the London train at Barnsley, and the deceit was discovered by the cashier and agent.

He was apprehended by Superintendent CRAWSHAW, of Barnsley, at Folkstone in Kent. When charged prisoner said he did not know what induced him to take the money, and that he was very sorry. Mr. KABERRY said that he was instructed by prisoner's friends at Barnsley on his behalf. TAYLOR was of a respectable family, but had lately got into debt through betting. He took the money intending to return it, and he felt his position very keenly.

The Bench said that they had decided on account of prisoner's previous good character to give the comparatively lenient sentence of three months' imprisonment, with hard labour.
