ATTEMPTED CRIMINAL ASSAULT Arthur CAVENDER, a young man, was brought up in custody at Whitehavn Police-court yesterday, charged with having, on Monday morning last, committed an aggravated assault upon a young woman named Mary Jane REDHEAD. Mr ATTER appeared for the defence. From the evidence it appeared that shortly after eleven o'clock on Monday morning, the prosecutrtix, who is a servant with Mr Patrick BRADY, Publican, Chapel Street, Whitehaven, went up stairs for the purpose of making the bed. The prisoner came into the bedroom, and after speaking to her, he caught hold of her, threw her on to the bed, got on the bed himself, and then attempted to further assault her. She screamed for assistance and succeeded in getting away. She then went and told her mother what had happened. The police were informed, and the prisoner was apprehended on a warrant, when he admitted that he had only thrown the girl on the bed for fun. He was sentenced to one months imprisonment and ordered to pay the costs, or be further imprisoned for a month. |
