ACCIDENTS AT DOVENBY COLLIERY. On Saturday last, two men, named William JOHNSTON and George WREN, met with an accident at the above named colliery, whilst following their employment as hewers. The men were engaged in "lying in" the coal, when a portion of coal and rattler fell upon them. Fortunately the overman, Mr. G. F. BROWN, and one of the deputies, were near the place, and extricated the men from their perilous position, or the result might have been serious. One of JOHNSTONE's hands was badly injured. WREN is not much worse. On Tuesday morning about half past five o'clock, another accident happened at the same colliery. A man named Robert McGEE was engaged driving a metal drift, the work being done by blasting. On the morning in question, McGEE had prepared a shot, and had rather carelessly attached the match to the fuse. Some of the powder had been allowed to run into the match paper, and as soon as he lighted it, the shot went off, and the metal of it came upon the unfortunate man's back and injured him severely. Dr. CRERAR was sent for and promptly attended him. We are glad to state that he is progressing favourably. ****** |
