LONDON, FEBRUARY 17 - continued ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Friday a communication was made to Earl GREY and Lord GRENVILLE, by the Prince Regent, through the medium of the Duke of YORK, on the subject of the formation of a new ministry. The precise contents of the communication have not transpired; but, according to report, whilst it expressed the satisfaction of the Prince Regent at the conduct of his present ministers, it also intimated an earnest wish, that the great parties of the State could be brought to coalesce on liberal and honourable principles. To this communication it is stated the Noble Lords, above mentioned, returned a written answer, couched in terms of the most profound respect, but, at the same time, declining to act with the present advisers of the Crown. Yesterday the Duke of YORK and the Marquis WELLESLEY had an audience of the Prince Regent, at Carlton House. -- Saturday afternoon Mr. PERCEVAL had an audience of the Prince Regent, at Carlton House; after which Mr. PERCEVAL went to his house in Downing street, and held a consultation with Mr. RYDER and the Earl of HARROWBY. -- Lord ELLENBOROUGH had an audience on Saturday of the Prince Regent. -- Mr. SHERIDAN had an early and very long audience of the Prince Regent, at Carlton House, on Saturday morning. His Royal Highness afterwards gave audiences to the Duke of YORK, Mr. ADAM, Mr. PERCEVAL, and Lord ELLENBOROUGH, which lasted to a late hour. -- The Duke of NORFOLK and Lord ERSKINE were also sent for to Carlton House yesterday, by the Prince Regent. We have the satisfaction to state, that all is again quiet at Nottingham. The Moniteur of the 4th boasts of the maneuvres of the Toulon fleet, which is stated to have failed, and returned in consequence of experiencing a severe gale. It is probable that the sight of the British blockading fleet had as much influence over this return as the weather. Each vessel is said to have resumed its birth [sic] in the port, without sustaining any damage. The fleet is stated to consist of 14 ships of the line, 4 frigates, and several corvettes. The Commander in Chief is Rear-Admiral L'HERMITE, and he has under him Rear-Admirals BAUDIN, VIOLETTE, and DABERRE. |
