LONDON, FEBRUARY 17. FRIDAY night, Corunna papers were received to the 3d inst. They communicate the satisfactory intelligence, that the French under BONNET have again evacuated Gijon, Oviedo, and the whole of the Asturias. The Spanish General PORLIER had taken 200 French Soldiers in Oviedo, and had sent forward his cavalry and light troops to harass the rear of the enemy. The evacuation of Oviedo by the enemy took place on the 23d ult. and is supposed to have been occasioned by dispatches which BONNET had received requiring him to join MARMONT with all expedition. A gentleman, just arrived from Paris, states that about a month ago as BUONAPARTE was surrounded by his guards, a pistol was fired at him by a Spaniard, the ball from which struck his breast, and fell upon the ground, from whence it is inferred he wears armour, like CROMWELL. It was believed that the delinquent would not be brought to trial, in order that the affair might be made as little public as possible. It is determined to proceed with the erection of the Vauxhall Bridge, but to make it of iron instead of stone, which may be done at an expence of about 90,000L. A meeting was held on Thursday last when the body of Subscribers came to the resolution. Two servants of John WINDER, Esq. of Vaynor Park, Montgomeryshire, have been committed for trial on a charge of stealing 250 bottles of wine, the property of their master. Two servants of Mr. PUCKELL, of Cotterstock, Northamptonshire, were drowned last week, by a horse taking fright and running into the river with them. Monday, Mr. WEBBER of Colnbrook, won a wager of 100 guineas, by riding nine miles, and running five, both within the hour. A man sold his wife in a halter in Smithfield, on Friday, for 5s. and half a pint of gin. Thursday the launch of the Chatham, of 74 guns, took place from the King's yard, Woolwich. She is the vessel that was building at Flushing, and was brought from the arsenal at the capture of Walcheren. Committed to Winchester Gaol. -- Alexander Lewis IRVOY (alias Monsieur DE MOLE), and Guilleaume BENURY, charged with forging six one pound promissory notes of the bank of Messrs. GOODWIN and Co. of Portsmouth. William POTTER, for a rape on Charity ROSE, at Hythe, in the parish of Fawley; and James ADGO, for an assault on the above Charity ROSE, in company with POTTER. |
