SUCCESS AT SKETCHING
COMPETITION.


James ROBINSON, of Arrowthwaite, Whitehaven, finished 27th in a  sketching
competition organized by a national newspaper and is entitled to two  years
free
schooling, with brushes and materials, at the British Dominion School  of
Art, London.

PARTON.


A lamplighter and scavenger for the village of Parton was chosen at  a
meeting preceding the Parish Council meeting on Wednesday night. There were
17
applications for the post, which number was reduced to three - Mr. T.
MITCHELL,
Mr. G. POSTLETHWAITE and Mr. J. HOLLIDAY. The first named received the
appointment.

ST. JOHN’S C. E. M. S.,
HENSINGHAM.


On Monday evening an open meeting was held in St. John’s Church  Hall, and
was fairly well attended. The Rev. E. FREEMAN presided and introduced  Mrs.
Jas.
McGOWAN, Whitehaven, who gave an interesting address on the League of
Nations, emphasizing the value of its work and its object of promoting a
World
Peace.

CALDERBRIDGE AND PONSONBY
CONSERVATIVE  ASSOCIATION.


A qualifying whist drive held at Calderbridge in connection with  the
Whitehaven Conservative whist tournament attracted 84 players. Mr. H. S.
DOUGHERTY
was M. C. and Mr. J. R. ATKINSON, Beckermet, presented the prizes to  the
winners.

WHITEHAVEN BENCH GRANT
EXTENSION.


On the application of Col. J. MASON the Whitehaven Bench granted an
extension of hours from 10 p.m. to 12 p.m. on December 14th to Mr. W. A.
SMITH  in
respect of the Grand Hotel, Whitehaven, on the occasion of the annual dinner
of
the Old Comrades’ Association of the Border Regiment.


HENSINGHAM HOMING  SOCIETY.


On Saturday the third show was held at the Globe  Hotel, Hensingham. The
calss was for likeliest cock, any age which attracted a  good entry. Mr.
Jonah
JACKSON, Cleator, was judge, and his awards were:  -

2. WILSON and LEWTHWAITE, St.  Bees.


3. J. GEERS, Keekle.


Nest week’s class will be for likeliest hen, and Mr.  E. JAMES, Moor Row

LORD LONSDALE’S GOLDEN
WEDDING.


The Earl of LONSDALE has received a cheque from the Lowther  tenantry as a
presentation from them to Lord and Lady LONSDALE on the occasion  of their
Golden Wedding. The money will be devoted to any purpose his Lordship
likes. The
cheque was accompanied by a beautifully illuminated book containing  the
names
of the donors.

GOSFORTH WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.


The annual meeting was held on Monday in the Mission Hall. The  competition
this month for the best piece of raffia  work was won by Mrs.  HARTLEY,
Gosforth Hall. The election for the  committee for 1929 resulted  as

HARBOUR WORKER’S WAGES.


The following is taken from the “Record” the journal of the  Transport and
General Workers: -


“Cumberland Ports. We have met the Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners  re
wages
and condition of the maintenance staff. These men have always been paid  a
higher rate than those at any other port, but the reduction which the
Commissioners asked for would have brought them to a much lower rate than
that  of
other ports. After a deal of discussion an amicable settlement was reached
to  the
satisfaction of the men.”

CONSERVATIVE WHIST DRIVE
AT  GOSFORTH.


The second qualifying whist drive in connection with the  Conservative
Divisional whist tournament took place on Tuesday in the Mission  Hall,
Gosforth.
There were 15 tables, and Mr. T. H. C. SQUANCE officiated as M.  C. Miss.
MATTERSON presented the prizes to the following successful players who
qualified to
play in the final: -

ST. JOHN  AMBULANCE
INSPECTION.


The Whitehaven Division of the St. John Ambulance  Brigade were inspected on
Sunday by Lieut. Col. N. McLAREN. Owing to this they  were unable to attend
the Mayor’s  procession.


The inspector gave the men several difficult tests,  and he appealed to the
members to do their best to make Whitehaven a real good  live division. He
told
them to stick in more and at all times to use   common sense. He also gave
good advice to the secretary of the Ladies Division,  and the members
attending
the N. C. O.’s classes. He was pleased to learn that  the ambulance car was
run by a public committee financially and manned by this  division.

MR. WILLIAM  McGOWAN.


Mr. Wm. McGOWAN, Chairman of the Whitehaven  Magisterial Bench, attained his
87th birthday on Sunday.

WHITEHAVEN MEMBER’S  ILLNESS.


Mr. R. S. HUDSON, the Member for the Whitehaven  Division, who was taken ill
suddenly a fortnight ago, was yesterday reported to  be making a good
recovery.

FORMER LABOUR  MEMBER’S
ESTATE.


The late Mr. Thomas RICHARDSON, Labour Member for  Whitehaven 1910-18, left
estate valued for probate at £30 8s 7d. He died in  intestate, and letters
of
administration of his property have been granted to  his widow.

ST. BEES MAN INJURED
IN  AMERICA.


News has been received at St. Bees that Mr. Stanley  PARKER was knocked down
by a truck in Chicago. He was conveyed to the hospital,  and was found to
have
received injuries to his arm and was badly bruised. After  a day or two in
hospital he was able to return to his  friends.




MARKET PRICES.


At the Whitehaven Market on Thursday eggs were 3s 6d per dozen, and  butter
2s 3d per lb.

The farm at Hall Carleton, Drigg now to be in the occupation of Mr.  J.
THOMPSON, has been let to Mr. J. BOOW.

HENSINGHAM CONSERVATIVE
ASSOCIATION.


The Hensingham Conservatives held another round in the  Whitehaven Division
Whist Competition on Wednesday evening. There was a good  attendance despite
the wet night. The following qualified for the final:  -
