GOSFORTH TAILORS. The death of Mr. Mathew SMITH, tailor, calls to mind the changes that have taken place in a once flourishing parish. At one time there were at least six tailors working in the parish, some of whom were employed journeymen. At that time most farmers had their suits made up from their own wool. Within recent years they have died, Jacob BRAITHWAITE, Wm. GUINESS, John JOHNSTON, M. SMITH. Wm. HELLON has removed, and now only one tailor remains to represent what was once a flourishing village industry. ********** WHITEHAVEN WESLEY GUILD. The Guild meeting this week, took the form of a “Mayoral Banquet.” On this occasion the Mayor and Mayoress were the Rev. and Mrs. G. H. B. JUDGE. All the toasts were voiced by Guild members; songs were sung by Mrs. JUDGE, Miss. BANKS and Miss. Lilian JOHNS, and a pianoforte solo was given by Miss. MILLINGTON. A large company partook of the excellent supper provided, and a most enjoyable and humorous evening was spent. ********** LITTLE BROUGHTON PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH. The service of song, “Fruitful Seed,” was repeated before a large congregation, on Sunday night. Mr. J. KNEENS, of Brigham, presided, and Miss. BYERS. Mr. John BYERS conducted, and Miss. G. BYERS was organist. ********* BILLIARDS COMPETITION AT ROWRAH. A billiards competition has just been concluded by members of the Y. M. C. A., Rowrah. On a charge of having stolen three lengths of plane wood, value, 5s, the property of R. C. CHARNLEY and Sons, Canal Head, Ulverston, from Summergrove Plantation, Hensingham, on September 26th, Joseph FITZPATRICK (50), unemployed, 137 Bowthorn Road, Cleator Moor, was ordered to pay 5s costs by the Whitehaven Bench, on Thursday. P. C. DICKINSON, of Hensingham, and Alexander CHAMBERS, foremen for R. C. CHARNLEY and Son, gave evidence. ********** WESLEY GUILD. The annual meeting of the Foreign Mission of the Egremont Welsey Guild was held on Monday when an interesting account of “The Islands of the Carribean” was given by the Rev. A. G. TUCK, of Workington, who laboured on the part for some time. Mrs. TONKIN sang “Nearer My God to Thee,” and a duet, “Beautiful Land,” was given by Mrs, TONKIN and Mrs. BARLETT. At the close of the meeting an excellent supper was served. ************ SISTERHOOD. At a gathering of the Egremont Wesleyan Sisterhood, on Tuesday, an interesting programme of songs and recitations was given by Mrs. LEWTHWAITE, of Braystones. An excellent tea was served. Mrs. TURNBULL presided. On Wednesday the Rev. T. TURNBULL delivered an interesting and stimulating lecture on “Our Hymns and Their Story,” in Moor Row Wesleyan Church. The choir gave many musical illustrations. Mr. GUNSON presided, and a good company greatly enjoyed the evening. A collection was taken for circuit funds. ********** BILLIARDS. Playing in the Whitehaven Billiard League, at Egremont, on Tuesday, Egremont Liberals defeated Hensingham Conservatives by five games out of six. HETHERINGTON and SHEPPARD made the best breaks with 83 and 45 respectively. Scores: - Egremont- S. HETHERINGTON, 150 R. CARTNER, 150 D. J. MCATTEER, 150. W. HARDY, 150 J. SLOAN, 126 J. The Bishop of Carlisle has offered the living of Ennerdale to the Rev. T. A. CARMICHAEL, Vicar of Bolton, near Penrith, who has accepted. The living has been vacant therough the cession of the Rev. W. JARDINE, now Vicar of Holme Str. Cuthbert’s. Mr. CARMICHAEL was ordained deacon in 1904 by the Bishop of Rochester, and was made priest in the following year by the Bishop of Southwark. He was formerly curate of New Malden-with-Coombe, Surrey from 1904 to 1906, and St. Silas, Nunhead, Surrey (1906-12). He has been vicar of Bolton since 1912. ****** WEST CUMBERLAND BEAGLES. The West Cumberland Beagles with W. TOMLINSON, huntsman, in charge, met at Ore Bank House, Bigrigg, the residence of Mr. C. C. DAVIDSON, on Wednesday morning. A good number of followers attended. Shortly after the casting off a hare was roused from a field near Croft Pit, and after doubling back and crossing the main Egremont to Whitehaven road, she proved a poor stayer, and was pulled down within ten minutes of the start near Clintz Quarry. Another hare was put up at Wangs Wood, and after a short hunt was lost. The hunt continued until four o’clock, during which time a further hare was scented, and after a game tussle was pulled down on St. Bees tops. ************ “A GREAT LITTLE WELSHMAN.” “A Great Little Welshman” proved an interesting subject to those who heard the Rev. C. A. HARRIES lecture at the Netherton Wesleyan’s Foreign Missionary Society meeting on Wednesday night. Mr. J. PATTINSON presided. ****** CHRIST CHURCH. Christ Church members had their annual tea and social evening at the Church Rooms, on Wednesday. There were 220 for tea and a large attendance at the dance, which followed. Wilson’s Orchestra played for dancing and Mr. W. J. CURPHY was M.C. Mr. R. BELL was secretary and Mr. J. W. ROOK treasurer. The proceeds were for church funds. ****** WIGTON PROVISION MARKET. Tuesday. - Butter, wholesale, 1/10 and 1/11, retail 2/- per lb. Hen eggs, wholesale 3/-, retail 3/3 per dozen. ******** CROSTHWAITE MEN’S GUILD. The Crosthwaite Men’s Guild met on Sunday afternoon, when Mr. C. W. KAYE, M. A., spoke on “Christianity, a philosophy or religion.” Mr. D. REES sang “Beautiful Land.” |
