KESWICK PUBLICITY ASSOCIATION. A largely attended meeting of trades people, shop assistants, and professional people was held at the Waverley Café on Thursday night, to consider a proposal to make a special effort on behalf of the Keswick Town Publicity Association, which is in debt. Mr. G. W. BAWDEN, Vice-chairman of the Association, presided, and it was decided to hold a monster whist drive and carnival ball at an early date, and to consider other events later. Mr. Harold USHER was elected chairman of the committee or organise the event. Messrs. R. DENNISON and F. McCADE secretaries, and Messrs. E. COCKBAIN, Miss. Mary M. WILSON, Miss. MILBURN, Miss. ROBERTSHAW, Messrs. C. FORSYTH, T. WOOD and R. HOLMES, the Executive Committee. ********** UNDERSKIDDAW WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Underskiddaw Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, the president, Mrs. W. SPEDDING, Windebrowe, presiding over a large company. Mr. A. W. RUMNEY, the novelist, gave a lecture on his travels from Jericho to the Dead Sea, illustrated with lantern slides. He was warmly thanked. Five new members were enrolled, bringing up the number to 70. A number of canvas slippers have been made for school children, and will be sent to the County Education Office, Carlisle. A choir has been formed, with Mrs. WAKEFIELD as conductor, with the object of competing at the Carlisle Musical Festival. A cookery class is being held in the Millbeck Reading Room, and a number of members have joined. In the competition for the best Christmas present, material to not cost more than 1/-, Mrs. GREEN was the winner with a pair of hand knitted gloves. The supper hostesses were Mrs. CLARK, Miss. BRUNSKILL, Miss. COATUP and Miss. KIRR. GLASGOW YOUTHS REMANDED. At a special meeting of the Keswick Police Court on Monday - before Mr. T. W. TOWNLEY - two youths, George DIVINE (16), and Josepg BELL (17), both of 110 King Street, Glasgow, were charged with breaking into the house of Mr. Fred GREENWOOD, 1 Park Holme, Keswick, last week. P. C. BUTTERWORTH spoke to receiving the prisoners into custody from the Kendal borough Police. Prisoners were remanded until Friday week. ******** BRAITHWAITE DEBATING SOCIETY. The Braithwaite Debating Society met in the Braithwaite Schoolroom on Friday night. The speaker, the Rev. W. R. BURNETT, presided. The debate was general on the subject “Modernism,” Mr. C. A. LINLEY opened the discussion and was seconded by the Rev. W. R. BURNETT. Mr. W. G. RICHARDSON, Mr. WORSLEY and Mr. W. WILSON spoke for modernism and <r. S. SHEPHERD against it. A vote taken at the close of the discussion showed a large number in favour of retaining “Modernism.” ****** KESWICK ST. JOHN’S ARMISTICE SUNDAY. At Keswick St. John’s Church on Sunday, the Armistace celebration was held, and was attended by the ex-servicemen under Lieut. H. T. PAPE, Keswick Detachment of the 4th Battalion the Border Regiment, under Sergt. MILLS, St. John’s Troop of Boy Scouts, Keswick Girl Guides, members of the Keswick Council, the Women’s section of the British Legion, and St. John’s Nursing Association. The vicar, the Rev. C. H. LEWIN, preached. The collection was in aid of Earl HAIG Fund. CROSTHWAITE MEN’S GUILD. The Crosthwaite Men’s Guild met on Sunday afternoon, when Mr. C. W. KAYE, M. A., spoke on “Christianity, a philosophy or religion.” Mr. D. REES sang, “ Beautiful Land.” ******* FOOTBALL. Threlkeld play Templesowerby in the Penrith and District League at Threlkeld on Saturday. Keswick Wesley Guild met on Tuesday, when Mr. T. F. EMERSON, Wearmouth, Durham, gave a lecture on “David Livingstone, missionary and explorer,” and dealt in an interesting way with his life and work. Mr. J. W. LUPTON presided. The lanternist was Mr. Alan WHITTLE. The lecturer was thanked on the motion of Mr. LUPTON. |
