FORTHCOMING CONCERTS. As will be seen from an advertisement in another column, a chorus and soloists, conducted by the Rev. Roland HIND, B. A., Primitive Methodist minister, Cockermouth, are giving four concerts of Christmas music, mainly from Handel’s “Messiah,” during the next month and in January. The concerts will take place on December 12th, in the Wesleyan Church, Broughton Moor; on December 14th, in Dearham Parish Church; on December 23rd, in All Saint’s Church, Cockermouth; and on January 13th next, in the Welfare Hall, Broughton. The remaining “Messiah” practices will be held on November 26th, December 3rd and 10th. ****** THE SISTERHOOD. The nineteenth anniversary of the Silloth Sisterhood, which numbers over 100 members, , was celebrated in the Christ Church Mission Hall on Tuesday evening. Tea, which had been organized by the Misses. A. and S. E. DONALD, was first served to a large number. This was followed by an excellent and varied entertainment given by children and friends. The Rev. F. C. COSTELOE presided, and amongst those taking part were: - Miss. P. DACRE Mrs. W. ROBERTSON Mrs. MOORE Mr. Thos. BOURNE Master WILLIAMSON Master John WISHART, and children from the Council Infant School. Miss. I. SORRELL and Mr. James SHIEL were the accompanists. The performers were entertained to supper by the Misses DONALD. PERSONAL. Congratulations to Mr. William NEWBOLD, Jenkin, Embleton, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday. ****** COCKERMOUTH POPPY DAY. In addition to the amounts reported on page 2 the sum of £2 2s 6d has since been received from Dean Church. ****** COCKERMOUTH PROVISION MARKET, MONDAY. Butter, wholesale 2s to 2d, retail 2s 2d to 2s 4d per lb. Hen and duck eggs, wholesale 3s to 3s 3d, retail 3s 3d to 3s 6d per dozen. ****** COL. GREEN-THOMPAON’S WILL. The will of Col. Andrew GREEN-THOMPSON (late 6th Inniskilling Dragoons), Bridekirk, Cockermouth, has been proved at £14,514 (unsettled), net (personalty) £11,836. ****** WRESTLING. There was a good attendance at the Cockermouth Academy on Saturday evening, when some good friendly bouts were witnessed. At last week’s match Mr. Isaac FEARON, Ullock, was referee, and Messrs F. COATES and W. ROBINSON judges. ****** COCKERMOUTH FUR AND FEATHER SOCIETY. The Cockermouth Fur and Feather Society are holding their annual show in the Drill Hall to-day (Saturday). There will be over 1,000 exhibits, and the reputation of the exhibition for the finest stock in the county promises to be well upheld. FURTHER EDUCATION AT BROUGHTON. Thirty young men attend the night school at Broughton conducted by Mr. J. M. LISTER, headmaster of the Day School. The class meets every Tuesday and Friday to study arithmetic and English. ****** DERWENT VALLEY WHEELERS. The recently formed Derwent Valley Wheelers held their opening run on Sunday, when 17 members had a very enjoyable ride round Bassenthwaite Lake and Thirlmere and visited the Druids Circle at Keswick. The weather conditions were ideal and the scenery along the route beautiful. ****** PRIMROSE LEAGUE WHIST DRIVE. At the fortnightly whist drive on Monday evening of the “Mayo” Habitation of the Primrose League there was a good attendance. Mr. W. WILSON was M.C.., and the prize winners were: - 1. Mrs. T. WHARTON 2. Mrs. ELLIOTT. Ladies playing as gentlemen: - 1. Mrs. WISE 2. Mrs. CUDBY. ****** LIBERAL CLUB WHIST DRIVE. There was a good attendance at the fortnightly whist drive at the Cockermouth Liberal Club and Institute on Wednesday evening, when Mr. J. W. WOOD discharged the duties of M. C. The successful players were: - 1. Mr. S. POOLE, (playing as a lady) 2. Mr. J. WATSON, (playing as a lady) Halftime score, Mrs. S. BEWLEY Gentlemen: - 1. Mr. J. ROOKE 2. Mr. J. W. COOPER Halftime score, Mr. J. WINDER. COCKERMOUTH PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH Good congregations attended the Cockermouth Primitive Church on Sunday, the occasion of the church anniversary. At the evening service the choir rendered the anthem “Holy art Thou” to the setting of “Largo in G,” under the direction of Mr. J. A. BELL, with Miss. K. BELL at the organ. The Rev. Roland HIND preached a powerful sermon on the subject “Mind your own spiritual business.” The anniversary was continued on Thursday with a successful concert given by Mr. W. G. BYERS and party. The artistes were in splendid form and all the items were greatly appreciated. Following the concert those present sat down to an excellent supper. The church has recently installed a new heating apparatus and to meet the expense involved the choir will make a special effort on December 6th, and the church will hold a sale of work in the New Year. |
