On Friday morning a fatal accident occurred on board the Golden Horn  
(Captain IRVING) while on a passage from Mersey to Newcastle.

When nearing St. Bee’s Head, the main boom was seen knocking about, and the  
mate, James IRVING, son of the Captain, about 24 years of age, made an attempt
 to fix it; in his efforts he overbalanced himself, and fell overboard.

His cries for help were heard by his father and others, who put out a boat,  
but it was no sooner lowered than it was dashed to pieces. The young man swam  
for a time, but disappeared, before the vessel, which was going at a rate of  
about nine miles an hour, could be put back.

Deceased who resides at Silloth, leaves a wife and one child.
