CAPE TOWN, March 30, via Plymouth. The Select Committee of the Transvaal Legislative Council, to whom the Native Hut Tax Bill was referred for report, have recommended that the tax should be increased from 10s, as originally proposed, to 20s, and the Bill, as amended, has been read a first time. ___________ Sir Garnet WOLSELEY will probably leave for Natal on April 4, and there await the arrival of Sir George COLLEY. ___________ Sir Henry BULWER has been entertained at Maritzburg by several public bodies, and regret at his departure from the colony is very generally expressed. ___________ The robbery of gold and diamonds from a majord at Harrismith was committed by Kaffirs, who have been captured. __________ Matters at Basutoland remain in status quo. The Basutos are not giving up their guns to any great extent, and the Government do not appear to be pressing the matter very severely. __________ Some special measures for the suppression of illicit diamond buying are to be introduced in the next session of the Griqualand (West) Council. ____________________________ |
