Shortly after 4 o’clock on Wednesday morning, the fire brigade received information of a fire in Charlton Street, Somers Town, London. Engines from St. Pancras, Holborn, Clerkenwell, and other station promptly attended. The fire proved to be at the Coffee House public house, 32 Charlton Street, the whole house of 18 rooms was destroyed. During the early stages of the fire the front wall of the house fell forward into the street, burying one of the firemen beneath the ruins. As quickly as possible the poor fellow was extricated from the debris but life was extinct. Deceased’s name was Patrick FITZGERALD, and he belonged to the Holborn Fire Station. He’d been but one year in the fire brigade, and leaves a widow and one child, about three months old. |
