MARYPORT WILL. Mr. George Albert COCKELL, 132 High Street, Maryport, left (net personalty £6,359), £6,408. ****** WINTER PRIMROSES Mr. D. W. ARMSTRONG, of Chapel Brow, taking a walk up the Lostrigg valley on Sunday morning, found a cluster of primroses in bloom. ****** FARM SOLD. Brayshaw Farm, Haile, consisting of 198 acres, part of Haile Hall Estate, which was offered for sale by auction on July 26th, has been sold by private treaty to Mr. J. R. HARRINGTON, the tenant. ****** CLIFTON AMBULANCE CLASS. Over 30 students enrolled on Monday evening for the great Clifton Ambulance Class, which is being held under the Mines and Qyarries Committee. Dr. FLETCHER, junr., of Workington, is the lecturer, and Mr. J. BRIGGS, secretary. ****** SILLOTH BRITISH LEGION. This branch held a whist drive in the club room on Thursday evening. Consolation, Mr. L. P. KNOWLES, 130. ****** ST. BEES MAN INJURED IN AMERICA. News has been received at St. Bees that Mr. Stanley PARKER was knocked down by a truck in Chicago. He was conveyed unconscious to a hospital, and was found to have injuries to his arm and badly bruised. After a day or two he was able to return to his friends. ****** SIDDICK P. S. E. The Miner’s Welfare Institute Ballroom had been attractively decorated by Mr. and Mrs. R. SPOONER for Saturday night’s social evening, when there was an attendance of nearly 150. Messrs. FAWVETT’s Blue Hungarian Orchestra, Workington provided and enjoyable programme of music. Mr. John CUNNINGHAM, Maryport sang with good effect “Get out and get under the moon” and on being recalled responded with “Mistakes.” Mr. Wm. MAWSON was the M. C. The door stewards were Messrs. E. B. LITTLE, Richard BLACKLOCK, Dan FEE, Jos. COWEN, with Mr. Wm. IVISON, general secretary. The proceeds were in aid of the sports and recreation fund. The annual fancy dress carnival will be held on Friday. ****** WIGTON PROVISIONAL MARKET. Tuesday. - butter, wholesale 1/10 and 1/11, retail 2/- per lb. Hen eggs, wholesale 3/-, retail 3/3 per dozen. ****** COL. GREEN-THOMPSON’S WILL. The will of Colonel Andrew GREEN-THOMPSON (late 6th Inniskilling Dragoons) of Bridekirk, Cockermouth has been proved at £14,514 (net personalty £11,836). ****** MR. G. A. BOYD. Mr. G. A. BOYD of Cockermouth has received another honour in football by his appointment as a touch-judge in the Cumberland v. Cheshire match at Birkenhead Park last Saturday. ****** A SPECIAL SERVICE. A special service for ex-servicemen at which a collection was taken for the British Legion Funds, was held at the Salvation Mission Hall, Wigton, on Saturday night, when an impressive address was given by Mr. Jos. DAVIDSON, Carlisle, whose text was “As for God, His was is perfect.” Solos were sung by Miss. DICKINSON, Carlisle. There was a good number present. ****** HARRINGTON Y. M. C. A. An interesting debate was held in the Y. M. C. A. Rooms on Thursday night, the subject being “Are Unemployment Exchanges fulfilling their duties?” Mr. W. TODHUNTER gave an excellent paper for the proposition, while Mr. R. DEANS took up the opposition. Mr. W. PARKIN was chairman and on taking the vote Mr. DEANS gained the verdict. ****** GETTING ON IN YEARS. The forty-ninth annual meeting of the Stingless Cup Temperance Inn and Reading Room, Aikton, was held on Friday night. A hearty welcome was accorded to the rector, president in the chair, and Mrs. LUCKLEY. Mr. John TIFFIN, churchwarden, the hon. Treasurer, gave an encouraging report, showing the best balance (over £) for many years. The members took supper with Canon HASELL, the founder, a number of young men supporters attending. ****** DEARHAM PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH. At the Circuit Sunday School Conference held in this church on Thursday night there were a good number present from Broughton, Cockermouth, and Broughton Moor. The Rev. Roland HIND, B. A., of Cockermouth gave an interesting address on “Practical Possibilities,” which was greatly enjoyed. Miss. HODGSON, Dearham, and Mr. J. A. BELL, Cockermouth, also spoke. Miss. K. BELL, Cockermouth, presided at the organ. The next conference is to be held at Broughton Moor in February. ****** HARRINGTON PARISH CHOIR. The members of the Harrington Parish Church Choir held their annual dance in the Old schoolroom, on Friday, when a very enjoyable time was spent by a company numbering 110. Excellent music was supplied by Rhythm Aces, of Workington. Mr. J. STEWART was M.C., and the doorkeepers were Messrs. A CAMPBELL and J. RAE. ADA NEWTON. ****** HOLME CULTRAM AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY. The first of a series of whist drives in aid of this society was held in the Silloth Café on Thursday evening. O. G. T. Bro. Jos. ELAND, P. C. T., presided over the weekly meeting of the Caroline Lawson Lodge on Thursday night, when the installation of officers for the ensuing 12 months took place.. Bro. T. PARK, Carlisle was installing officer, assisted by Bro. Jos. HEWITSON (lodge deputy). The newly-elected officers installed were: - Bro. H. HENDLEY, C. T. Sis. E. SMITH, V. T. Sis. G. GRAHAM, secretary Bro. J. ARMSTRONG, treasurer Sis. MAXWELL, chaplain. Sis. J. HAYTON, organist. Bro. PARK gave details of a series of meetings to be held during the first week in December in connection with North of England Temperance League. ****** CROSBY BRITISH LEGION. The Crosby British Legion held a whist drive and supper in the school, Crosby, on Friday. The stormy weather affected the attendance. The following were prize winners: - Ladies:- 1. Mrs. SEMPLE, 182. 2. Mrs. Hy. FAWCETT, 168. Consolation, Mrs. TINKLER, 144. Gents: - 1. Mr. J. ELLWOOD, 172. 2. Mr. Jas. SEMPLE, 169. Consolation, Mr. T. TOMLINSON, 137. Messrs J. DAVIDSON and R. ELLWOOD were M. C.’s. Capt. J. DAWSON moved a comprehensive vote of thanks. The supper arrangements were in the capable hands of Mesdames J. HUNTER, R. TIFFINB, GREY and BELL (Garborough), of the Ladies’ section. Messrs. T. GREEN and A. HUNTINGTON were doorkeepers. ****** POPPY DAY AT WIGTON. Poppy day at Wigton was a very stormy day and a decrease of £12 on last year was the result of the day’s effort, during which a total approaching £72 was realized. The collection was under the management of the officials of the Wigton Branch of the British Legion. Further sums are yet to come in. ****** |
