*******

INSUFFICIENT  KNOWLEDGE.

Joseph William ELLWOD, farmer, Stoneraise, Threlkeld,  was charged with
having used a motor car without a revenue license, at  Cockermouth, on
October 15th.

P. C. VIPOND said he saw the defendant using the car  in question bearing an
expired revenue license. Asked why it had not been  renewed, defendant said
he would renew it that night. A license had been taken  out since.

Defendant, pleading guilty, said he had intended to  get a license that
morning in Keswick, but was unable to, as he had a pig in the car, which
gave him some trouble. He thought a license could be issued at a Post  Office at  any
time, but found the time limit had  expired.

The Chairman : Fined 30s.

Supt. RITCHIE: Can you pay now?

Defendant: Oh yes, I can manage that.

(Laughter).
