When, on Sunday, Councillor D. J. MASON entered upon  his second year as
Mayor of Workington by attending divine service at the Parish  Church - last
year he went to St. John’s Church - he was accompanied by members  of the Town
Council, Corporation officials, Poor Law Guardians, ex-servicemen,
territorials (two units), boy scouts, girl guides, members of the V. A. D., boys
brigade, fire brigade and police, who formed a procession a quarter of a mile  long,
and who, together with other burgesses, filled almost every seat in the  town’s
largest church. The Mayoress was also there. The two local silver bands
attended. The church took twenty minutes to fill, and in consequence the
service was delayed.

The service was conducted by the Rector, The Rev. S.  P. L. CURWEN, and the
Rev. Alfred AINLEY, M. A., Vicar of St. Bees and the  Mayor’s
brother-in-law, read the lessons and preached the sermon. The text was  taken from the 17th
chapter of St. John and the 19th verse - “And for their  sakes I sanctify
myself.”  Service at its best, the preacher said, could only be  inspired by Christ’s
spirit. Social order was the product of personality, and  that personality
only fulfilled itself through service. There was no antagonism  between the
spiritual life and the social life; Our Lord’s first word of  teaching was
character and the second love.

The hymns sung were “Judge eternal, throned in  splendour,” “O God of earth
and altar” and “To Thee our God we fly.” The  National Anthem was sung at
the end of the service.
