At Maryport Police Court, yesterday, before Messrs. T. BLAIN  (chairman), J.
DAVIDSON, J. WILLIAMS, and G. FERGUSON, William J. McAVOY (23),  colliery
on-setter, Greenhow’s Cottages, Fothergill, Flimby, was charged with
unlawfully committing damage, amounting to 11s  3d, to an electric lamp at  Risehow Pit
Yard, the property of the Risehow Colliery, Coking and By-Product  Co., Ltd.,
on November 8.


Watchman McCRACKEN said on Saturday, Nov. 7, the lamp was in good order. On
Monday morning between 6 and 7 a.m. he noticed the lamp was out. He got a
man to  take the lamp down and on examination it had been apparently shot with
an air  gun.


The lamp, produced had a hole through it. He estimated the damage at  11s
3d. It was very dangerous for engines shunting and for men coming and  going
from the pit with this lamp out.


George HODGSON, James Place, Fothergill, said he was in company with
defendant on Sunday, November 8. Defendant had an air gun. On the way home
defendant had a shot at the electric bulb in the Pit Yard and broke it.


Defendant pleaded guilty.


The Chairman: Then it is quite true?


Yes.


The Chairman: Can you give any reason for your conduct?


No.


Inspector SEMPHILL said defendant was before the Court in 1928 for stealing
billiards balls.


In answer to the Chairman, defendant said he was working at Risehow  Pit.


Watchman McCRACKEN: He is a very good workman or he would have been
dismissed immediately.


The Chairman: You will be fined 10s together with the damages, 11s   3d,
making £1 1s 3d in all/


Defendant asked for time to pay. He said he was earning £1 17s a week, but
his father was out of work.


He was given 14 days in which to pay.
