  Some people may think that COL. J. H. DUDGEON, whom his colleagues
have unanimously selected to preside over the Workington Petty Session, was
next in order of seniority.  This, however, is not the case.  Five members of the
same Bench survive who were made magistrates before him, and two more claim
exactly the same length of service.  Sir John S. RANDLES (who has not attended
for 15 years or more) was sworn in in 1901;  Mr. Herbert THOMPSON in 1902;
Ald P. WALLS in 1903; Capt. Ralph FALCON-COOK in 1907, and Mr. W. L. FLETCHER
in 1908; while Mr. Joseph HARDING and Ald. F. HALL claimed their seats on the Bench
on the same day as Col. DUDGEON.  So that, apart form his extreme fitness to "equally
balance the scales of justice," Col. DUDGEON had no other claim to the appointment.
During the last year or so Col. DUDGEON has often presided over that Court in the
absence of the late chairman, and no doubt it was the able way in which he did so that
influenced the unanimous expression of confidence in him on Wednesday.
