Cockermouth's New Vicar, Archdeacon of Westmorland

Canon J. H. HOPKINSON, the new Vicar of Christ Church, Cockermouth, was ordained in 1914, when he became curate
of Colne, Lancashire.  During the Great War he served in the R.A. M. C., and subsequently became Vicar of Holy Trinity,
Colne.  Later he was Rector of Christ Church, Moss Side, Manchester and Vicar of Burnside, near Kendal.  In the Carlisle
Diocese he is the organiser of religious education and an examining chaplain to the Bishop.  For the past three years he has
been one of the residentiary canons of the Cathedral.

Canon Hopkinson will also become Archdeacon of Westmorland.  He was asked by the Bishop to take the office, which is
being vacated by the resignation of Archdeacon LAFONE  in June.  In accepting the office Canon HOPKINSON asked that he
might be allowed to resign and be given some parochial charge within the Westmorland Archdeaconry.  The living of Christ
Church, Cockermouth, became vacant, and the trustees offered it to Canon HOPKINSON, who has accepted it. Therefore he
will cease to be canon of the Cathedral and will become Vicar of Christ Church, Cockermouth, and Archdeacon of Westmorland.
In resigning the Archdeaconry of Westmorland, Archdeacon LAFONE also resigns the living of Kendal, the gift of Cambridge
University.  He is to retire.

We understand that Canon HOPKINSON will remain in Carlisle until August, although in the meantime he will go to and from
Cockermouth.  Until he take up his duties the services at Christ Church, Cockermouth, are to be conducted by the Rev. T. FEATHER-
STONE, B. D. , who was for many years vicar of Holme Eden, Carlisle, and is now a licensed preacher of the Diocese.
