"THE PLACE I CONSIDER TO BE THE
NICEST SUMMER RESORT IN
CUMBERLAND, AND WHY?"

******

Dear Uncle Sam, - Of all the places I like best to visit in the summer is
Seascale. I like to go along the sands and gather pebbles, and see the people
enjoying themselves.

Of all the places I like best,
I think Seascale will beat the rest,
For what with trips on a summer's day,
And the children always are at play.

I remain, your loving nephew,

Jonathan SHEPHERD,
South Lodge, Calderbridge.

Dear Uncle Sam, - I consider St. Bees the nicest summer resort. I sometimes
go in the summer holidays and stay with my Uncle John, when we go to the beach
and gather shells. I like St. Bees because it is cleaner than town. I would
like to stay in a village better than a town. - I remain your affectionate
nephew,

J. H. WARWICK,
The How, Seascale.

******

Dear Uncle Sam, - The nicest Cumberland resort I know is Eskdale. The reason
why is, that it is such a pretty place, and it is visited by hundreds of
people every year, some for pleasure, some for the benefit of their health, and
which the fine pure air soon puts all right again.- From your loving niece,

Hannah HIRD,
Hollinghow, Eskdale.

Dear Uncle Sam, - I have visited several places in Cumberland, but I
consider St. Bees the most charming of all. It has advantages which are wanting in
larger and more popular resorts. The sands are firm and clean, bathing can be
safely enjoyed, the views out to sea are expansive, the air is bracing, and
the short visit I paid there was to me a time of perfect enjoyment. - Your
affectionate nephew,

W. H. GARLAND,
Wasdale Head.

******

Dear Uncle Sam, - I think Whitehaven is the nicest place I know of, as I
think I could spend two or three days at Whitehaven the best, where I could have
a walk on the pier and see the beautiful ships and the harbour and the sea,
as I like to see the waves splashing round the pier, and see the birds
following the boats. I think I could spend a day or two watching them and another
day or two looking at the beautiful shops and walking up and down the streets.
- I am, your affectionate niece,

Anne MOFFAT,
Prospect House,
Eskdale.
