The members of this league held their annual concert, supper and ball in the Market Hall, Cleator Moor on Monday evening. The hall was well filled. Mr F. A. CIAPPESSONI, who presided, explained the object of the concert, etc. There was no one in the room, he said, who had not heard of J. F. X. O'BRIEN. - (Applause.) - a man who could say what what probably few other persons in England could say, that he was once condemned to be hanged, drawn and quartered for treason. Well for a number of years J. F. X. O'BRIEN has been secretary of the United Irish League in England, and having been forced to lay down the reins of office owing to old age, it had been decided to make him a testimonial and the proceeds of this social are to go to that purpose. (Applause.) The Chairman also alluded to education which he said was the vital question of the day. He hoped that parents would see to it, and instead of allowing boys to run about the streets when they!
were fourteen, keep them at school until work is obtained for them. He also referred to the loss which the Irish Cause would sustain by the retirement of Councillor MURPHY from public bodies, owing to his appointment under the County Council. The programme was very interesting. Miss Clara SMITH, principal soprano, Our Lady and St. Joseph's, Carlisle, delighted her audience with her charming voice.
