3,761 complaints of neglect and cruelty in England, Wales and Ireland
during October. Of the 3,715 cases completed 3,656 were found true. These affected
the welfare of 9,233 children and concerned 5,249 offenders.
3,478 cases were warned or advised; 46 were prosecuted (resulting in 43
convictions; and 137 were dealt with by transfer or in other ways. From its
foundations in 1884 the Society has dealt with 1,388,951 cases, involving
3,801,592 children.
In the West Cumberland Branch during the same month 10 cases were dealt
with, affecting 32 children. The local office for the Society is situated
at Workington.
