MELANCHOLY AND FATAL ACCIDENT

At the cutting of Brow Foot, about one mile from Keswick, on the
Cockermouth, Keswick, and Penrith Railway, a very distressing accident
happened on Friday to a workman named John Charters, a native of Keswick.

The workmen were commencing work after dinner, when a sudden fall of earth
occurred, crushing the poor fellow very seriously. He was immediately
extricated and carried to an adjoining house. Mr. Tweeddle, surgeon, was
soon in attendance, but the injuries were of such a nature that he died in
less than an hour after the accident. The deceased leaves a wife and two
children.
