DEATH OF MR. J. STALKER,
DEMESNES.
____
We regret to announce the death of Mr. Jonathan STALKER, of Demesnes Farm, Sandwith, which took place on Tuesday last, at the advanced age of 94 years.
The deceased gentleman was the oldest farmer on the Whitehaven Castle Estate, having farmed the above named place since 1848. He was also tenant of the adjoining farms of Bell House and Greenbank, and in former years farmed the Long Close Farm, and in Caldbeck district, leaving that place for Demesnes, where he has ever since resided.
Few men were better known or more respected than Mr. STALKER, and during his lengthy career as a farmer probably no man witnessed greater changes in the price of farming produce or the introduction of modern farming machinery. In earlier years he was well known as both a breeder and judge of Clydesdale horses, but he was never a keen exhibitor.
Mr. STALKER took little interest in public affairs, giving both mind and time to his own occupation, and as recently as two years ago he would almost daily ride over some portion of the land he had so long and so successfully farmed. His remains will be interred on Saturday afternoon at St. Bees.
