WORKINGTON PRIEST’S SILVER
The Rev. Father HUTCHINSON, senior priest at the Workington Catholic Church, completes his twenty-fifth year in the ministry this year, and to mark the event the Workington Catholics decided to make him a suitable present. Subscriptions came to hand freely, with the result that a handsome gold chalice, suitably inscribed, was purchased.
The presentation took place on Sunday night, the Rev. Father STANDISH presiding over a crowded audience. The Chairman said the occasion was something that did not happen in the lives of most priests, and for that reason it was an important period of one’s life. He pointed out how Father HUTCHINSON had left a beautiful home and everything that a man could cherish, because he wanted to go out into the world to do good work. (Applause.)
The chalice was a very costly article, but far above that in value was the esteem of the people who had subscribed to it. In their name he had great pleasure in handing over the present, (Applause.)
The Rev. Mother Superior, on behalf of the sisters at the Convent presented father HUTCHINSON with a beautiful set of covers for the missal stands, and a handsome stole.
Miss. NOTTAGE, on behalf of the Guild of St. Mary, presented the Father with an illuminated address.
Father HUTCHINSON, on rising to reply, was greeted with loud cheers. He thanked all concerned in appropriate terms for the handsome presents and their good wishes, and said they would encourage him to double his endeavours on their behalf.
