AT PARTON.
___
There is promise of quite a lively contest for the office of Guardian, rendered vacant by the death of the late Mr. Joseph DALZELL.
The period for accepting nominations closed yesterday, Tuesday, and there were no fewer than four candidates nominated for the single seat: -
Mr. W. CARMICHAEL, chairman of the parish council.
Mr. W. W. DALZELL, of Rosehill, Moresby
Rev. H. J. ALLEN, rector of Moresby
Mr. James BIRD are contesting the seat.
At a meeting of the Harrington Lodge of the Miner's Union it was decided to run a candidate. A committee was appointed to select a suitable candidate and take the necessary steps for his nomination. The committee met on Saturday, and, after due consideration, it was decided that Mr. James BIRD, president of the Harrington Lodge of the Miner's Union, and president of the Whitehaven and District United Trades Council, be the candidate.
The members of the Trades Council expressed their approval on hearing the report of what the Harrington miner's had done, and offered to give every possible assistance to the candidate. The polling is fixed for Friday, October 6th.
