COCKERMOUTH v. PARTON.
The first match of the season between these clubs was played on the ground of the latter on Saturday last. Neither of the clubs was represented up to their full strength, especially Parton, whose team was largely composed of second fifteen men, several of the members who proved a valuable acquisition to the first team last season having abruptly left the club this year. It was, therefore with difficulty that the Parton Club were able to get together a team to meet their opponents.
Cockermouth having won the toss, McQUHAE kicked off shortly after half past four. The visitors' forwards followed well up, and it soon became apparent that they were somewhat heavier than those of the home team, and that the latter would have to work harder to avert defeat. The ball was kept within a few yards of the home team's goal line for a considerable period, and a good deal of scrimmage ensued, the Cockermouth men ultimately getting the ball over the line, but only a touchdown was registered. The play now became of a very even character, neither team gaining any material advantage, and at half time the the score was two touchdowns for each side.
In the second half the Cockermouth men had the best of the game. After a touchdown for them, GIBSON got over the line and claimed a try, which the Parton captain objected to, on the ground that GIBSON had gone outside the touch flag before crossing the line. The kick at the goal, however, was taken, but the point was not improved upon. The Partonians did not attempt to charge the ball. Some give and take play then took place, GIBSON eventually securing a try, but the major point was not obtained. Neither side scored again, and on the call of "No-side" Cockermouth were victors by one try, and three touchdowns, to two touchdowns. The following were the teams:
A. VARNER, fullback
J. W. MCQUHAE
W. BLEASDALE, three quarter-backs
J. MILLER, half-backs
C. GLOAG, forwards
W. SHARP, full-back
W. T. BENNETT
E. STABLES, three-quarter backs
A. DIXON, half - backs
W. NICHOLSON, captain
G. S. ELLIOTT
D. D. MOORE, forwards
Mr. T. NETTLETON (for Cockermouth) and Mr. T. ROBINSON (for Parton) officiated as umpires.
