The Times, 16 October 1871 (p.10, col. B) SALMON OUT OF SEASON. John HOLMES, Robert HOLMES, and John PATTINSON, of Bowness-on-Solway, were summoned before the country magistrates at Carlisle on Saturday on a charge of violating the Salmon Fisheries Act by taking and killing salmon in the Solway Frith, near Bowness, on Thursday last, otherwise than with a rod or line; also with having unlawfully had in their possession a leister, or spear, with the intent to kill salmon. The Bench convicted all three, and fined them each 5L. for killing salmon; also 2L. for each fish (20L.). The fines and costs, together amounting to 37L. 2s. 6d., were paid. The leister was forfeited, but not the boat and nets, as the magistrates did not consider it had been proved that the fish had been caught in the nets. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
