CUMBERLAND RIFLE VOLUNTEERS

CUMBERLAND.

The members of the First Company of the Cumberland Rifle Volunteers have commenced preliminary drills.  MR. CARRUTHERS, who originally subscribed 100 l. to the rifles, has now appropriated 60 l. of his contributionn to the artillary, and other donations have been promised.

At Whitehaven the movement for the establishment of a rifle brigade and artillery corps in the west of Cumberland has progressed very satisfactorily.  The force is to be called the West Cumberland Rifle Brigade and Whitehaven Artillery Corps.  The subscription list for the rifles, headed by LORD LONSDALE with 100 l., amounts to nearly 300 l., and for the artillery 70 l.  MESSRS. DOSS and FLETCHER, iron ore miners, have volunteered to equip with uniform, arms, and accoutrements (except the Government allowance) 66 riflemen and 53 artillerymen.

An enthusiastic meeting was held at Workington on Wednesday evening to establish a rifle volunteer corps in that town, in connexion with the West Cumberland Rifle Brigade.  There was a numerous attendance of men of all classes of political opinion, the lord of the manor, MR. HENRY CURWEN, presiding.  A resolution was passed approving the movement, and determining that a company should be raised in Workington, in connexion with the West Cumberland Rifle Brigade.  It was also resolved that an artillery corps should be formed, to be called the Workington Artillery Corps.  Preliminaries were arranged, and nearly 200 l. was subscribed in the room.  A considerable number of volunteers have given in their names.

At Brampton, the **Bolted Will Rifles** have donations promised to the amount of 137 l., and annual subscriptions 37 l.  Forty-one gentlemen have offered to serve or provide substitutes.

At Wigton 90 l. has been promised in donations, and 16 l. in annual subscriptions.
