ROBBERY AT PENRITH RAILWAY STATION.

On Tuesday afternoon last,  117 l. was stolen from the goods' department office at Penrith station, on the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway.

The money consisted of gold and silver which was in a leathern money bag, which was hanging in the office.

It appears that two bags containing money usually hang against the wall behind where the clerks sit;  and that it is the duty of one of the junior clerks, at certain times, to give these bags to the guard of the express train, who takes them to the head office at Lancaster.

On Tuesday afternoon, about 3 o'clock, on the arrival of the train, he went to take the bags to the guard, and there only being one, he gave it to him.  Nothing more was said or done till after the arrival of the down train, in the evening, from Lancaster, by which there was a message to the managing clerk that only one of the money bags had arrived at Lancaster.

On this the junior clerk was questioned as to the bags, when he said he only gave one bag to the guard of the express train.

Both bags were seen in their usual places about 20 minutes before the arrival of the express train;  and when, how, or by whom the bag was stolen still remains a profound secret.

Officers were immediately despatched to Lancaster and other places, and every exertion set on foot whereby to discover the theft;  but hitherto (Wednesday evening), without affect.
