THE CUMBERLAND BARD. - A few days after the death of the late Robert ANDERSON,
it was stated in one or more of the London papers that he had died in the
workhouse, in a state of great abjectness and poverty; and some reflections were
cast upon the people of Carlisle for allowing a man of genius to die thus
neglected. We cannot at present lay our hands upon the paragraph, but the above
is its purport, and we here give it a most unequivocal denial. For a
considerable period prior to his death, and after he had ceased to labour for
his own maintenance, he was comfortably lodged, and every necessary provided for
him, out of a fund raised amongst a few gentlemen in Carlisle; and though he
certainly died in "poverty" (according to the usual acceptation of the word), he
had not experienced any real want. - Carlisle Journal.
