THE TIMES, Wednesday, October 17, 1838

A PUBLIC MEETING OF THE INHABITANTS OF PENRITH.

A public meeting of the inhabitants of Penrith was held on Tuesday last, when, amongst other resolutions, the following was unanimously adopted..............................

"That the execution of a line of railway between Penrith and Carlisle is highly deserving of public support, as it would not only be of great advantage to all the local interest in the district through which it is intended to pass, but to the adjoining neighbourhood and county of Westmoreland;  and that a capital be created of 170,000 l. in shares of 50 l., and half-shares of 25 l., for the purpose of carrying the project into effect."

MR. HENRY HOWARD, of Graystoke-castle;  the HON. H.C. LOWTHER, M.P.;   MR. WILLIAM CRACKENTHORPE, of Newbiggin-hall;   MAJOR AGLIONBY, M.P.;   and other influential gentlemen took part in the proceedings of the day.

The town-council of Carlisle have passed a resolution in favour of the project.
