IMPORTATIONS FROM THE WEST COAST BY RAILWAY. -
We have this morning (Monday, April 24) seen some rather curious and certainly
very novel illustrations of the benefit of railway communication. We very rarely
see any turbot or soles in Newcastle fish-market, but we, of the east coast,
have by means of the Carlisle railway, just received a supply of those fish from
the west coast. The practice of sending them here we have no doubt will be
continued, for they may be brought at so moderate a charge as to enable the
retailer to sell them reasonably. While potatoes are bad here, we shall probably
see quantities of good ones brought from Cumberland. This has already commenced.
