This distressing malady now prevails to a very serious extent indeed in
Carlisle, although it here wears a mild form. Some hundreds of all classes are
now suffering from its debilitating effects; it is attended here with giddiness,
violent cough, and strong sensations of fatigue at the extremities. It seems,
indeed, a most painful task to walk the length of a street, and many are utterly
incapable of all labour. Some of the manufactories are partially suspended,
owing to the number of their workpeople suffering from this peculiar disease,
and in the higher ranks there are very general complaints of its rapid
increase. - Carlisle Patriot.

The influenza, though somewhat late in visiting Dumfries, compared with some
other parts of the country, has reached us at last, we may almost say with a
vengeance. Last week we were aware that at least a few families had been
attacked in both town and country; but as the epidemic was by no means general,
we felt averse to create, by any statement of ours, what is generally termed
"unnecessary alarm." But, unfortunatly, the state of the public health has so
completely altered within the last few days, that there is no longer any use in
the slightest concealment. In the towns more particularly - and we believe it is
much the same in the country - scarcely a single family has escaped; and on
Sunday last the churches and chapels in Dumfries and Maxwelltown were as near as
maybe two-thirds depopulated. In our schools, public as well as private, it is
much the same; and we have just learnt that Mr. OLIVER, on Thursday last, was
minus no fewer than 83 scholars. But the disease, upon the whole, is very mild,
particularly in the case of the young and healthy, although we have heard of a
few deaths in consequence of other supervening complaints. - Dumfries Courier.

The Cumberland Packet states that upwards of 4,000 persons (one-fourth of the
population) in Carlisle are suffering from the effects of the influenza.
