On Wednesday night, while a schoolmaster, named NEWBALD, was viewing WOMBWELL's
collection of wild beasts at Carlisle, he imprudently, and against the warnings
of the keepers, patted the tiger on the head as it lay apparently asleep. The
animal took no notice at first, but suddenly turned round and seized his hand in
its jaws. The man screamed out, and the keepers immediately ran to his aid, but
it was with some difficulty they compelled it to let go its hold. The hand,
which was dreadfully lacerated, has been amputated.
