24 Oct 1836 Recapture of William Goodwin Print E-mail
William GOODWIN, the man who beat and manacled the Kendal officer, on the route
to Appleby gaol, and succeeded in making his escape with the horse, gig, watch,
money, &c., of the officer, has at last been taken and safely lodged in Leith
gaol. When apprehended he showed fight to the braw Scotch laddies, and defended
himself gallantly until overcome by numbers, when he became all courtesy and
politeness, telling them, with a bow, that he felt it as much his duty to avoid
losing his liberty as they conceived it theirs to deprive him of it. -
Westmoreland Gazette.
