On Monday evening last it was discovered that two old people, Owen M'CANN and
his wife, had lost their lives in their dwelling-house, situate on the
Forge-green, English-street, Carlisle. On Sunday the house remained locked up
without exciting any suspicion, the neighbours thinking the old couple might
have gone into the country. On Monday night, however, the house still remained
closed, a police-officer was sent for, and the door was broke open. On entering
the inner apartment, the door of which was closed, the first object that
presented itself was the body of the old man, in a kneeling position by the
bed-side, quite dead, and his wife in bed, lying upon her back, also dead. The
cause of death was quite apparent; the burning of the fire in the close
unventilated room had generated carbonic acid gass in such abundance as to cause
death, and that without the unfortunate victims being aware of their approaching
end.
