The Times, Tuesday, Oct 08, 1822; pg. 2; Issue 11684; col E As we anticipated in our last, several wholesale dealers in forged notes made their appearance at Brough-hill fair on Monday last. A check, however, was put on their depredations by the attendance of an Agent to one of the Scotch banks, who cautioned his friends against receiving any Scots notes from strangers, without their being previously inspected. At this fair a gentleman, finding himself jostled, instantly put his hand on his watchpocket, and rescued his watch from a thief who had seized the chain: the villain was suffered to escape with a good drubbing. - Carlisle Journal. |
