The brewers and spirit-merchants of Carlisle have determined to memorialize the
Treasury, on the consequences of smuggling Scotch whisky over the borders into
England. Vast numbers of persons are engaged in the illicit traffic, and it is
supposed that from 8,000 to 10,000 gallons a week are smuggled into Carlisle and
its vicinity, at about 6s. per gallon, introducing drunkenness into the cottages
and farms. - Evening paper.
