The Times, Tuesday, Jan 22, 1828; pg. 3; Issue 13495; col E

On Saturday morning last, the London mail was overturned between Brough and
Appleby on its way to Carlisle. Yesterday (Friday) morning the same mail did not
arrive in Carlisle until near 11 in the forenoon, having lost full four hours.
It took eight horses four hours to pass the mail and coach over Stainmoor, which
is done in ordinary weather with four horses in two hours and thirteen minutes.
In the above storm the horses were almost all that time breast-deep, and they
literally dragged the vehicle through by main strength, the wheels never turning
round. - Carlisle Journal.
