A bookseller in Rickergate, Carlisle, on Sunday se'nnight, writes thus: - "The
water has nearly reached the ceiling of my shop and kitchen. When I last went
down stairs, I plunged up to the chin in water. A merchant has just passed my
window in a boat. He says all his furniture and stock in trade, worth 2,000L.,
is under water! I hope the flood has now attained its height. I am just going in
a boat to the post-office."
