DEATH BY A BULL. - On the 27th ultimo, John GILL, of Kaber, near Kirkoswald,
Cumberland, went to the cow-yard to let out a bull of the short-horned breed, as
was his custom; hitherto the animal had been perfectly harmless, but on this
occasion he stepped back a few yards, and then rushed upon his master with all
the ferocity which these creatures are known to possess when irritated; his
master fell before him, and the savage beast began to gore him dreadfully.
GILL's wife, hearing an unusual bellow from the bull, ran out, and saw her
husband gored by the savage animal. In the horror of the moment she rushed in,
took up her husband, and carried him into the house, the bull standing
motionless: as if stricken with his work of destruction, he suffered her to
depart without molestation. She passed a gate in going into the house, with her
almost lifeless husband, and when she had reached the door, the bull darted
forth, and in the fury of his passion completely demolished the gate. On
surgical aid being procured, it was found that the whole of the unfortunate
man's ribs on one side were broken in, as also his breast bone, and one of his
eyes completely gored out. After lingering nine days in great agony, he breathed
his last.
