                              COUNTY OF CUMBERLAND.

In pursuance of a requisition, requesting the High Sheriff, John MARSHALL, Esq.,
to call a meeting of this county on the subject of economy and parliamentary
reform, the most numerous and respectable meeting ever known in the county took
place at Wigton on Thursday last. The chair was taken by the High Sheriff.

Mr. J. R. G. GRAHAM, of Netherby, M. P., moved, and Mr. Henry CURWEN, of Bell
Isle, seconded the resolutions, which being put to the vote, were carried
unanimously.

Mr. LAWSON, of Brayton-hall, moved a petition to the House of Commons, embodying
these resolutions. The motion was seconded by Mr. BROWN, of Fallentire-hall
[sic], and also carried unanimously.

A loud cry being raised for Mr. BROUGHAM, that gentleman made his appearance,
and was most rapturously received by the freeholders.

Mr. BROUGHAM thanked the meeting for their kindness and sympathy in allowing him
to address them covered. He had been labouring under a most severe
indisposition, and nothing but a deep sence of the importance of this meeting
could have prevailed upon him to leave his home. This day, however, he beheld a
sight which was sufficient to make a sick man whole, and, he might add, many a
whole man sick. (Loud cheers.) The enemies of reform, the friends of corruption,
might have profited by it: they would hear the knell of their hopes tolled at
every meeting of English yeomanry to call for their birthright - a full, fair,
and equal representation in parliament. (Loud cheers.) Mr. BROUGHAM concluded a
short but impressive speech by moving the thanks of the meeting to the High
Sheriff.
