Mr. CURWEN's return for the county will produce another contest in this city;
from all appearances, at present, a very warm one. Sir Philip MUSGRAVE, Bart.,
arrived here early on Saturday morning, immediately announced his intention of
becoming a candidate, and commenced a canvass, which he has since continued with
great activity. Mr. JAMES, of Barrock-lodge, also arrived in Carlisle on the
same day; he likewise made known his intention of again offering himself to the
notice of the freemen, and began a diligent canvass. The friends of both Sir
Philip MUSGRAVE and Mr. JAMES are prosecuting as active a canvass as was perhaps
ever recollected. Whenever the contest comes on (it cannot take place till after
the meeting of Parliament), it will be a very arduous one. - Carlisle Patriot.

The chairing of the LOWTHERs took place on Thursday morning. It was more like a
funeral than a chairing of members of Parliament, without the usual joy
expressed on such occasions. - Carlisle Journal.
