LANCASHIRE ASSIZES, Monday, August 17, 1818.

The Judges came into Lancaster late on Saturday evening, and opened the commission.  This morning Mr. Justice BAYLEY took his seat in the "Nisi Prius" Court precisely at 9.  The tithe case transferred from Carlisle was first called, and is likely to occupy the Court the whole of this day.

CROWN SIDE

MR. BARON WOOD came into Court at 10, and after the usual formalities, charged the Grand Jury of which LORD STANLEY is foreman.

The calendar contains 47 prisoners, under the following charges:

Burglary 13
Highway Roberty 4
Rape 2
Child-Murder 1
Grand Larceny 6
Forgery 3
Uttering Forged Bank of England Notes 3
Possessing Forged Bank of England Notes 1
Cutting and Stabbing 1
Horse-stealing 2
Sheep-stealing 2
Croft-breaking 2
Manslaughter 5
Bigamy 1

The great political contest in Westmorland seems to occupy the minds and to agitate the passions of the Kendal men at this moment as strongly as during the election.

We observed "Brougham-street" in a conspicuous part of the town.

The confidence of MR. BROUGHAM's friends is very great.

One very striking symptom of failure on the part of the LOWTHER family, is the forced production of a "new paper" to advocate their cause.
