                              CUMBERLAND ASSIZES.
                                       ------------------
                         CARLISLE, MONDAY, AUG. 23.

                                          CIVIL SIDE.     [continued]

                             MOORE V. NIXON. - DEBT.

This was an action brought by the plaintiff, as administrator to his father, a
mason, to recover the sum of 6L. 11s. due to his father by the defendant, also a
mason.

Thomas MILBURN, was referee, together with John NIBBLY, upon this subject; their
award was, that the defendant should pay 6L. 11s., which the defendant promised
to do.

(This witness, a tall determined man, enforced his answers by an emphatic knock
upon the box in which he stood.)

Cross-examined by Mr. RAINE. - You clinch every thing, my friend; you nail what
you say? It is true, Sir. - So, you were arbitrator in this matter? They only
met me with a tailor. (Shouts of laughter.) What, they matched you only with a
fraction of a man, and your blood was up? No, Sir, I said so only because you
were hard upon me. He is a respectable man, a very nice man, Sir.

Mr. RAINE addressed the Jury for the defendant, and called John NIBBLY, who
swore that he had never agreed to an award; the defendant's daughter, who said
she had seen her father pay 5L. to plaintiff's father; and another witness, who
heard plaintiff's father say, that 5L. worth of stones were due to defendant.

Verdict for the plaintiff - Damages 6L. 11s.
