The Times, Tuesday, Aug 26, 1817; pg. 3; Issue 10234; col B CUMBERLAND ASSIZES. ------------------ CARLISLE, WEDNESDAY, AUG. 20. [continued] CROWN SIDE. The criminal trials at our assizes closed this day; the following is a list of the prisoners capitally convicted: - Hugh HOGAN, aged 42, charged with high treason on account of his having in his possession 1 iron puncheon or stamp, upon which was impressed the resemblance of one of the lawful silver coin of this kingdom, called shilling, and also several other tools used for coining. - John HOGGART, aged 26, charged with feloniously taking and carrying away 3 heifers, the property of Elizabeth BIRD. - Lowther JEFFERSON, aged 19, charged with feloniously and burglariously breaking and entering the shop and dwelling-house of J. WALLAS, and stealing a box and hurden-bag, containing copper coin of the value of 30s. The said Lowther JEFFERSON and James SMITH, alias MARSTON, aged 17 years, charged with feloniously and burglariously breaking and entering the warehouse and dwelling-house of I. BROWN. - Edward MATTHEWS, aged 22, and Richard SARGEANT, aged 20, charged with robbing James DOUGLAS on the King's highway, between Egremont and Saint Bees. - John DOWLING, aged 20, charged with robbing John MATTHEWS, upon the King's highway, of four Bank of England tokens, of the value of 3s. each. - Thomas SHAW, aged 19, charged with having stolen 5 guineas, one Whitehaven guinea note, and one Newcastle silver token, of 1s. value, in the house of Joseph ADDISON. - James DONALSON, aged 22, charged with stealing a mare. - James AFFLECK, aged 53, and John STEPHENSON, aged 35, charged with uttering and paying to John ARNER a forged bill of exchange for 160L. knowing the same to be forged. Mary YOUNG, aged 43, charged with having in her possession, on the 8th of October, 1816, 28 forged Bank of England notes of the value of 1L. each, 1 forged Bank of England note of the value of 2L., and 6 forged Bank of England notes of the value of 5L. each, knowing the same to be forged - 14 years' transportation. Arthur BROWN, charged with uttering and publishing as true, a certain forged and counterfeited will, purporting to be the last will and testament of one John BROWN, was acquitted, not being of sound mind. Nancy NICHOL, aged 28, charged, by the Coroner's inquest, with the wilful murder of John M'GOWIN - No Bill. The Grand Jury represented to the Judge, that this woman had been wrongously imprisoned since September last, as there was not the least shadow of a charge against her; and the Judge, on dismissing this poor unfortunate woman, gave the Coroner a most severe lecture for his misconduct. Before the Judge left Carlisle, he reprieved all the prisoners under the sentence of death. |
