                    CARLISLE ASSIZES, Sunday, Aug. 9.

At 11 o'clock this morning, the Judges, accompanied by the High Sheriff and the
Magistrates of the City, proceeded to the Cathedral. The press of people of all
descriptions was very great. The seats and benches for the accommodation of
hearers are more numerous than in any other cathedral in the kingdom, yet the
passages and porches were excessively crowded. The musical part of the service
was well conducted and well executed. Much devotional fervour appeared to
animate all present. A deep impression seemed to affect every breast as Mr.
Justice BAYLEY audibly, solemnly, and most emphatically repeated the Apostles'
Creed. Mr. LUTHATE, brother-in-law to the High Sheriff, preached. His text was
Amos v. 14. "Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so the Lord the God
of Hosts shall be with you." It was decidedly a political discourse.

[Here follows a long sermon, not transcribed.]
