                              CUMBERLAND ASSIZES.

                        CARLISLE, SATURDAY, AUG. 8.     [continued]

                                      CROWN COURT.

Mr. Baron WOOD came to the Crown Court a little after 11. The usual formalities
having been gone through, the grand jury were sworn, Lord MORPETH foreman. His
Lordship having remarked to them that there was no case in the calendar which
called for particular observation, they retired. In the course of half an hour
Sir James GRAHAM returned with a true bill against Joseph CLARKE, aged 38, for
stealing a tea-caddy with tea in it, and a pound of loaf-sugar. He pleaded
guilty to the charge.

The Court was now idle for another half-hour, when Sir James GRAHAM again
appeared with a true bill against James GREGGINS, aged 21, for stealing some
wearing-apparel out of the cabin of the sloop Delight. He too pleaded guilty.

This suspense had greatly thinned the Court, both within and without the bar.
Just at this moment came a letter addressed to "The Clerk of the Court," praying
for admission to see the proceedings from a Mr. M'CORMICK, for a considerable
time Depute-advocate in Scotland, and lately appointed Sheriff of Bute. Such an
application, and at such a time, seemed scarcely intelligible; when Mr.
M'CORMICK appeared to explain it in person. He was directed by the courteous
clerk to take his seat on one of the empty seats before him. It was invidiously
inferred from this circumstance, that the Scotch courts of justice must be
difficult to access.

                                SHEEP-STEALING.

Henry MACNAMARA, aged 25, was charged with having stolen one sheep and four
lambs from Joseph TWENTYMAN, which he drove 17 miles, and sold to Walter BLACK,
near Workington. After the evidence for the prosecution was closed, the prisoner
was called on for his defence. He said he had got the sheep from KIRKBERTSON, in
payment of a debt. - Guilty.
