The Times, Tuesday, Aug 11, 1818; pg. 3; Issue 10432; col B CARLISLE ASSIZES, Friday, Aug. 7. ---------------- The calendar contains 15 prisoners; 1 for highway robbery, 2 for uttering and 2 for possessing forged Bank of England notes, 1 for sheep-stealing, 1 for assaulting and obstructing three officers of Excise and 8 for various kinds of theft. At 6 o'clock the High Sheriff, Milham HARTLEY, Esq., and his spearmen, proceeded towards Brampton, to meet the Judges. At 7 the two Judges, the High Sheriff, and the Under Sheriff, returned in the High Sheriff's carriage and four horses. There were no other carriages, but this defect was well compensated by the impetuous stir and bustle of every soul in this little town. All the boys had their little poles headed with brass plates and inscribed with "M. H. Esq. 1818," in exact imitation of the spears carried by the Sheriff's men. All the young ladies, and a considerable number of old wives, were a-breast at the windows, anxiously catching a glance of my Lords. Both Judges went directly to the Nisi Prius Court (the other Court being less finished) and opened the commission. - Adjourned till 9 o'clock to-morrow. |
