The Times, 23 September 1809 (page 3, column E)

Last week, Andrew BRYEN, convicted at the last Cumberland Assizes of
uttering forged Bank-notes, and sentenced to death, but afterwards reprived;
and --- M'LEAN, sentenced at the Quarter Sessions to be transported, broke
out of Carlisle gaol. Preparatory to this, they had, under covert of a
quantity of old straw, which lay in the yard, at various opportunities,
displaced several bricks in the outer wall, in that part adjoining to
English-street, sufficient to admit their bodies. M'LEAN was almost
immediately secured; his companion, though pursued, effected his escape, and
has not since been heard of.
